UT3 deserved better in my opinion as it did some things better than its predecessor UT The gameplay in general was far more balanced and closer to UT It just felt as they tried to make a more "realistic" Shooter, as where hip at the Time, and that took out all the Soul of the Game. New Games will also never be able to get the same amount of Mods and Skins from Fans nowadays.

You kinda got Team Fortress 2 coming a month before to completely obliterate any thunder it could had have, along with HL2: Episode 2 and Portal. Eventually they decided to repurpose UW as a single-player, third-person game disconnected from the Unreal universe, as they felt that class-based arena shooters were old hat. I recently tried reinstalling to play and there are still servers with people on them, but most servers are filled with Godlike bots. The humans that still play are beyond elite level too, so it's not as fun.

Unreal Tournament 4 being cancelled was the final blow for arena shooters. Many blame its cancellation on Fortnite, but the reality is that it was always inevitable.
