Vader did whatever the Emperor told him and was actively afraid of his master. No one else in the galaxy had such a hold over Vader but Palpatine.

Fans only got to see Palpatine fight with a lightsaber three times but each time was pretty impressive. One of the most impressive times was when he battled Darth Maul and his brother Savage Oppress, battling them both at the same time. Maul and Oppress were among the most dangerous Sith of the Clone Wars and Palpatine punked them out with ease. Wielding two lightsabers, Palpatine made the two skilled Zabraks look like first-time combatants, overwhelming them with his combat skills.

In the end, he killed Oppress and thoroughly demoralized Maul, showing them who was the real Sith Lord. Usually, this show of Force with four of the best lightsaber duelists in the Order would have been enough but Palpatine showed the Jedi otherwise. Springing into action, Palpatine killed Fisto, Kolar, and Tiin seconds into the battle.

Killing Jedi isn't easy for anyone but Palpatine was able to kill three senior masters with years of experience between them in the opening stages of the battle, proving just how dangerous he could be. Palpatine's Force powers were legitimately amazing. Palpatine was the culmination of millennia of dark side knowledge and he used all of those powers in his conquest of the galaxy. While he was mostly pretty passive, when he cut loose with his powers, there were few who could match him.

Not only did he consume all life on the planet, he consumed the very Force itself , leaving Nathema a complete void. Force users have been known to go insane if they spend too much time there. After Ziost he actually admits that he considers them a worthy adversary.
