Till your engine is under warranty, it will keep running as long as there is fuel. It will run quivalent of kms without oil change. As soon as it gets to know warranty is over, it will die. What has the warranty in similar with engine running? And how might it die in the event of warranty lapse? S, Roy. Narayan, wheelguy. Every engine is conscious. ITs self aware. Somewhat like skynet. Infact, one day I think engines will take over the world. So once its aware that warranty is over, it dies. Its a part of the great plan to increase stress in the owners, and make it easier to take over the world.

The idling will last forever until:. It is the same when you park your car in the parking lot. Definitely, the time of idling your vehicle depends on how many gas you have in the gas tank and is there any part of your car broken. Otherwise, the battery will be drained out and need to be recharged.
When you need to start the engine, just connect the battery and the vehicle will run without any issue. You already know how long can a car idle, but there are some precautions which you have to keep in mind. They are:. There is a clear answer for how long can a car idle, but how long should a car idle? It is believed that you should keep your car idling for 30 second to a minute would suffice. So when you are stuck in the traffic or wait for the traffic light.
Leaving it running for longer than 1 minute that would bring additional pollution to the air. Or if you turn off the engine even if you just need to wait for 10 — 20 seconds, it consumes more fuel than letting your car idle.
What about parking, how long can you keep your car running in park? When you park a car, after packing, usually most of us will take some minute to relax, get prepared before going out of the car.
It may take a few minutes, take time for us. No one wants to come out without being well prepared. There are several causes of idling, and they often cannot be avoided. For example, there is nothing you can do about your car idling while you are stuck in traffic.
Furthermore, if you are driving a vehicle that runs on diesel , not letting it idle can be considered a borderline criminal offense.
To elaborate, idling a diesel engine allows the exhaust fumes to clear. That saves you from getting a ticket for polluting the air. Finally, if you are not an avid driver and your car sits unused for days on end, you might want to consider idling it once a week. Doing so for about a minute will keep the engine in good shape. Technically, the answer to this question is — indefinitely.
We say technically because your car will eventually run out of gas. And it will not idle without gas. However, if you let your car idle for as long as there is gas in the tank, you can be sure that your engine will keep running. That is to say; it will keep doing so unless something, such as a thermostat or a fan belt, breaks.
If all your systems are functioning properly, the engine will heat up to the operating temperature and resume working until you turn it off. Most cars nowadays contain water-cooling systems. Therefore, it is not necessary for the air to flow into the engine to cool it down. Your car will not inevitably overheat if left idling.
