I have googled, but even with Gov websites, I am seeing conflicting answers. Background: My work horse estate I have found this last 8 months has had some work done in the past and the rear inner arch was left off it, I'm guessing many years ago, and although I found rust in the filler cap area behind the flap I thought nothing of it as it was french, and prone to rusting.

Over the last few months though, I have found that using a screwdriver, I was able to get rid of most of the supporting neck with no force at all. Also lifted the boot carpet and found it was soaked and full of holes. Also, the rear pull-down flaps inside where the jack etc is stored, this was pretty much missing! This means you have exactly one year from your last test until your next one is due.

However, there is the option to MOT your car early:. You can MOT your car up to a month minus a day before it runs out. Although you have renewed early, your renewal date will still stay the same on your certificate for next year. However, you can renew your car even earlier if required — if you renew your MOT up to more than one calendar month before, the test will then be valid until 12 months from the new test date. If your car has failed its MOT, this means the car is dangerous to you, other drivers and other passengers in your vehicle.

The DVSA state your vehicle needs to meet the minimum standards of being roadworthy at all times. If a test is carried out a month before the due date, the MOT is effectively valid for 13 months. Much online speculation has surrounded the subject in recent years, with many people believing booking in early is a good thing.

You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid. You'll need to provide us with the vehicle registration number and either the original MOT test number, or V5C document reference number which is on the V5C registration certificate. Driving an un-roadworthy vehicle is dangerous to you, your passengers and to other road users and could earn you endorsements on your licence, so we would always strongly recommend that any faults found by our MOT testers are repaired before you drive your vehicle away, even if you still have some time before your certificate expires.

According to DVSA guidance, your vehicle needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined. Please enable cookies in your web browser to improve your shopping experience.
