The answer file enables OEMs and corporations to customize Windows Setup tasks, for example, specifying disk configuration, changing the default values for Internet Explorer, and installing additional drivers.
The single answer file replaces all the answer files that were used in previous versions of Windows Unattend. Windows SIM enables you to customize the settings in a Windows image.
Based on your configurations, you can create an unattended Windows Setup answer file, typically called Unattend. This answer file is used during Windows Setup to apply your configurations to Windows. In the answer file, you can specify changes to default operating system components and add additional software, such as out-of-box drivers or product updates.
On a reference VM computer, install the operating system and any programs that you want installed on your destination computers. Click Start , type cmd, and then click OK. Notice that you can run everything on the command-line which is how I normally use it. You can choose to prepare a new instance of SQL Server or add sys prep supported features to an existing prepared instance of SQL Server on the machine.
For more information on how to add features to a prepared instance of SQL Server see Add Features to a prepared instance. On the License Terms page, read the license agreement, and then select the check box to accept the license terms and conditions.
To help improve SQL Server, you can also enable the feature usage option and send reports to Microsoft. A description for each component group appears in the right pane when you highlight the feature name. You can select any combination of check boxes. The prerequisites for the selected features are displayed on the right-hand pane. SQL Server Setup will install the prerequisite that are not already installed during the installation step described later in this procedure.
Click Next to continue. This is the case for default instances and named instances. The Instance ID remains the same as specified. To specify a non-default root directory, use the field provided, or click Browse to locate an installation folder.
The directory specified in the prepare step will be used during configuration in the Complete step. The Disk Space Requirements page calculates the required disk space for the features that you specify.
Then it compares the required space to the available disk space. The System Configuration Checker will run prepare image rules to validate your computer configuration with the SQL Server features that you have specified. The Ready to Prepare Image page shows a tree view of installation options that were specified during Setup. On this page, Setup indicates whether the Product Update feature is enabled or disabled and the final update version. To continue, click Prepare.
SQL Server Setup will first install the required prerequisites for the selected features followed by the feature installation. During installation, the Prepare Image Progress page provides status so that you can monitor installation progress as Setup continues.
After installation, the Complete page provides a link to the summary log file for the installation and other important notes. If you are instructed to restart the computer, do so now. It is important to read the message from the Installation Wizard when you have finished with Setup.
This completes the prepare step. If you have a prepared instance of SQL Server included in the image of you machine, you will see a shortcut in the Start Menu. The image was taken from a Dell Optiplex So i hope someone more knowable than me can let me know if there is another way around this in order to boot my backup on this different type of computer.
I would capture the image again, with sysprep, but I don't understand why would you want to use PCs. I am unable to capture the image again as i do not have the original Optiplex where i took the image from in the first place.
I don't mean do it without a PC I mean why use a PC for a server OS - yes, it works, but I don't get the logic, that's not likely to be where it resides, surely? How many systems are you planning on installing it on, server OSes these days should be virtual so deploy from templates or ISO very quickly.
Just the windows server that it currently is imaged as. I used the restore backup from the software to place the image onto the elitedesk but like i said, any boot becomes BSOD. But the hardware is different, if the restore is not hardware independent it could be a driver issue, I still don't get why you would be using a restore like this. Simple because the server is already setup with domain, active directory, remoteapps, etc and i do not want the hassle of having to set all that up again.
Your DC should not be doing all that either, certainly should not be allowing users to login to it, even if it is RDWeb. You should still be following best practices.
